What Causes Equine Ulcers?

Equine Ulcers – Where Does The Truth Lie?

Did you know that a staggering 60% to 90% of performance horses suffer from gastric ulcers? Yes, you read that right! Even worse, it’s all but impossible to check for hind gut ulcers.

These silent saboteurs can drastically affect your horse’s health, performance, and quality of life. Check out the chart below to see the estimated percentage of horses with ulcers that relate to your situation.

The Ulcer Epidemic

Gastric ulcers are more common in horses than most owners realize. Stress from training, travel, poor diet, and competition, combined with diet and management practices, can lead to the development of these painful lesions. The symptoms can range from subtle behavioral changes to severe colic, making early detection and treatment crucial.

How did we get here?

Rather than taking you down all sorts of rabbit holes at the risk of sounding like a crazy person, let’s put it as simply as we can. You ready? Grain. Horses are not meant to eat it. Never were. Never are. Never will be.

Now we can certainly agree to disagree and I’m perfectly happy to still be your friend, but let’s conduct a little exercise together shall we? I want you to go to THIS STUDY, then open THIS LINK or any popular AI tool like Claude, Bard or Lama and ask it to summarize this study in simple easy to understand language as if it were explaining the results of the study to a 5th grader. This just cuts through all the gobbledygook and gets right to the facts of the matter. Of course feel free to put in any grade level you wish.

Scroll down a couple paragraphs if you’d like to skip to the results.

Simply copy and paste the following “prompt” into the box on the AI tool’s page: summarize this study in simple easy to understand language as if you were explaining the results of the study to a 5th grader:

Then simply go to the study we opened in the other tab, and starting where it says Horses, just below the word Abstract. Copy all the way down until you get to section 5 and stop at the bottom of the conclusion. Then paste all of that into chat GPT or other AI tool after the prompt you entered earlier. Hit enter. Easy right?

For the sake of time, I’ve taken the liberty of doing it for you but you’re free to do it on your own of course. Here’s what it said:

The Results Are In

This study compared two diets for horses raised for meat: one high in cereal grains (HCG) and another high in fiber (HFG). The study found that horses fed a high-cereal diet had more intestinal issues, such as “leaky gut,” and more bacteria in their liver and lymph nodes. They also had lower muscle water and protein content, and lower amounts of healthy fats. The high-fiber diet led to better overall health markers, indicating that fiber-rich diets are healthier for horses, and better for their welfare.

Now of course some of you might be saying, but what about this, what about that? To which I’d reply, this is but one study of many. There are plenty more out there showing worse harm, all pointing to the same thing. We’ll begin summarizing and releasing more of them as time permits, but the evidence is quite clear if you just stop and look around.

Our horses have never been fatter, more diseased more sick and more injury prone than at any point in recorded history. So here’s our assertion. Putting them on better diet that consists of whole foods that are much better suited to their delicate microbiome is a much better idea for a whole host of reasons. Ulcer prevention being just one of many.

Equine Ulcers and the Risks of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha: A Hidden Risk

While Ashwagandha is incredible at reducing stress, improving focus and performance and even preventing stress induced ulcers , it’s essential to know that Ashwagandha can actually aggravate existing gastric ulcers that have not gone through a proper healing protocol. This adaptogenic herb can increase stomach acid production, which can worsen existing ulcers and related symptoms. Can you say Dragon anyone?
